Project Literacy at SXSW

Research by the University of Massachusetts has shown that 200 million Americans own an electronic device that can read and write. Yet one in seven adults in the U.S. today – that’s 32 million people - are struggling to become literate themselves.

By launching our 2017 “Give Your Word” campaign at the SXSW Interactive Festival, Project Literacy aims to bridge the gap between technology and literacy, working closely with over 100 global partners to enable future generations to benefit from the opportunities that literacy brings.

Get involved in our immersive experience at SXSW, or tune into our livestream and social activity using #ProjectLiteracy, to find out how you can give your word to help.

Breaking the Cycle of Illiteracy Event

There are 750 million illiterate adults in the world today, yet there are over 1 billion smart devices that know how to read and write.

Join our distinguished speaker panel as they discuss how technology could be leaving one in ten people on this planet behind. Following this, hear from a brave adult about their personal experience with literacy and enjoy the premiere of our ‘First Words’ film.

Date: Monday March 13

Time: 11:30am CDT

Location: Techspace - 45 Brazos Street,
Austin, Texas

Tech x Literacy

Technology creates a huge opportunity to bring literacy to people all over the world.

We asked a few newly literate adults - people that have been courageous enough to improve their literacy skills later in life - what it means for them to be able to make the most of everyday technology the rest of us take for granted.
